Microsoft Power BI intermediate level course: Exploiting the best Business Intelligence tool

 

 

Last week we celebrated our intermediate level course in data analysis with Microsoft Power BI 

Attendees rated the course very positively, because it had met their expectations of making considerable progress in the mastery of the business intelligence tool Power BI.

Power BI is considered to be the best business analysis tool according to the Gartner Quadrant, led by Microsoft in 2019.  What sets Power BI apart from traditional tools, such as Tableau or Qlik, is that it provides real-time insights and integrates seamlessly with Excel and the other Office 365 tools. Because it allows you to spot trends, it helps you make better business decisions.

 

Requirements for the Intermediate Power BI Course

This course of data analysis with Power BI intermediate level required some prior knowledge:

• Being an expert user of Excel
• Have knowledge and experience in the use of Power Query
• Knowledge and experience with  Power Pivot
• Basic level of Microsoft Power BI. Several of our students had already done with us the Introduction to Data Analysis with Power BI Course, we held last March.

 

What we learned in the Introduction to Microsoft Power BI Course

 

In the introductory course to Microsoft Power BIWe learnt how to use the tool Power BI from scratch. We start by understanding what is business intelligence and all the general concepts of business intelligence. We also learned how to consolidate data from different sources (Excel, Access, flat files, web pages, data in the cloud...) and automate the transformation of this data with the Power Query tool.

At the end of the introductory course of Power BI students were able to connect to multiple and varied data sources, easily transform them and visualise them in a customised dashboard, with all their KPI (key performance indicators or key performance indicators) and tailored to their needs. They also knew how to build interactive reports, with the ability to share them with their entire organisation, on any type of device.

What we have learned in this Data Analytics with Power BI - Intermediate Level Course  

In this course we have gone deeper into the use of the tool and all its functions:

• Extraction and Transformation Module

We have made progress in learning Power Query and we have been introduced to the language M: 

• Advanced Power Query transformations.
• Working with Functions in Power Query.
•  Recursive data loads.
•  The advanced editor and introduction to the M language.

 

• Modelling Module

• Types of Relationships

We have seen the usefulness and application of the use of inactive relationships and the use of the filter address.

• Calculated Fields and DAX expressions

We have learnt how to construct calculated fields, extending the range of functions learnt in the introductory course, such as:

•  Ranking and TOPN.
•  Moving year (LTM).
•  Measurements at origin.
•  Balance variables, such as debt or stock.

We have used DAX Studio for carrying out these exercises.

 

•   Security Module

We have learned how to restrict the data visualisation depending on the user making the query. We have worked with roles, and with the implementation of dynamic security in the model itself.

 

• Visualisation Module

• Use of Markers and Buttons. We have built a mobile panel to show or hide filters through the use of buttons and markers.
• Customised visualisations. We have managed visualisations available on the Marketplace such as the synoptic panel or the Sankey diagram.
• Geo-visualisation. We have explored the different options for representing data in maps in Power BI.

• Power BI Administration. We looked at all the Power BI business configuration options, organising access to reports and installing and configuring gateways to connect to your on-premises data.
• Apps in Power BI. We have learned how to create and disseminate content in the organisation.
• Natural Language Queries. We have improved the model so that natural language queries respond correctly.
